    Empirical fitting of forward backscattering models for multitemporal retrieval of soil moisture from radar data at L-band

    A multitemporal algorithm, originally conceived for the C-band radar aboard the Sentinel-1 satellite, has been updated to retrieve soil moisture from L-band radar data, such as those provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) mission. This type of algorithm may deliver more accurate soil moisture maps that mitigate the effect of roughness and vegetation changes. Within the multitemporal inversion scheme based on the Bayesian maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) criterion, a dense time series of radar measurements is integrated to invert a forward backscattering model. The model calibration and validation tasks have been accomplished using the data collected during the SMAP validation experiment 12 spanning several soil conditions (pasture, wheat, corn, and soybean). The data have been used to update the forward model for bare soil scattering at L-band and to tune a simple vegetation scattering model considering two different classes of vegetation: those producing mainly single scattering effects and those characterized by a significant multiple scattering involving terrain surface and vegetation elements interaction. The algorithm retrievals showed a root mean square difference (RMSD) around 5% over bare soil, soybean, and cornfields. As for wheat, a bias was observed; when removed, the RMSD went down from 7.7% to 5%

    Frequent Itemset Mining for Big Data

    Traditional data mining tools, developed to extract actionable knowledge from data, demonstrated to be inadequate to process the huge amount of data produced nowadays. Even the most popular algorithms related to Frequent Itemset Mining, an exploratory data analysis technique used to discover frequent items co-occurrences in a transactional dataset, are inefficient with larger and more complex data. As a consequence, many parallel algorithms have been developed, based on modern frameworks able to leverage distributed computation in commodity clusters of machines (e.g., Apache Hadoop, Apache Spark). However, frequent itemset mining parallelization is far from trivial. The search-space exploration, on which all the techniques are based, is not easily partitionable. Hence, distributed frequent itemset mining is a challenging problem and an interesting research topic. In this context, our main contributions consist in an (i) exhaustive theoretical and experimental analysis of the best-in-class approaches, whose outcomes and open issues motivated (ii) the development of a distributed high-dimensional frequent itemset miner. The dissertation introduces also a data mining framework which takes strongly advantage of distributed frequent itemset mining for the extraction of a specific type of itemsets (iii). The theoretical analysis highlights the challenges related to the distribution and the preliminary partitioning of the frequent itemset mining problem (i.e. the search-space exploration) describing the most adopted distribution strategies. The extensive experimental campaign, instead, compares the expectations related to the algorithmic choices against the actual performances of the algorithms. We run more than 300 experiments in order to evaluate and discuss the performances of the algorithms with respect to different real life use cases and data distributions. The outcomes of the review is that no algorithm is universally superior and performances are heavily skewed by the data distribution. Moreover, we were able to identify a concrete lack as regards frequent pattern extraction within high-dimensional use cases. For this reason, we have developed our own distributed high-dimensional frequent itemset miner based on Apache Hadoop. The algorithm splits the search-space exploration into independent sub-tasks. However, since the exploration strongly benefits of a full-knowledge of the problem, we introduced an interleaving synchronization phase. The result is a trade-off between the benefits of a centralized state and the ones related to the additional computational power due to parallelism. The experimental benchmarks, performed on real-life high-dimensional use cases, show the efficiency of the proposed approach in terms of execution time, load balancing and reliability to memory issues. Finally, the dissertation introduces a data mining framework in which distributed itemset mining is a fundamental component of the processing pipeline. The aim of the framework is the extraction of a new type of itemsets, called misleading generalized itemsets

    Low-cost, high-resolution, fault-robust position and speed estimation for PMSM drives operating in safety-critical systems

    In this paper it is shown how to obtain a low-cost, high-resolution and fault-robust position sensing system for permanent magnet synchronous motor drives operating in safety-critical systems, by combining high-frequency signal injection with binary Hall-effect sensors. It is shown that the position error signal obtained via high-frequency signal injection can be merged easily into the quantization-harmonic-decoupling vector tracking observer used to process the Hall-effect sensor signals. The resulting algorithm provides accurate, high-resolution estimates of speed and position throughout the entire speed range; compared to state-of-the-art drives using Hall-effect sensors alone, the low speed performance is greatly improved in healthy conditions and also following position sensor faults. It is envisaged that such a sensing system can be successfully used in applications requiring IEC 61508 SIL 3 or ISO 26262 ASIL D compliance, due to its extremely high mean time to failure and to the very fast recovery of the drive following Hall-effect sensor faults at low speeds.     Assessment of the secondary shelf life of Bolognese sauce based on domestic use simulation

    Household food waste contributes significantly to global food waste throughout the food supply chain, resulting in a substantial waste of resources. The inability of consumers to utilize food before it spoils generally leads to its disposal, thus representing one of the causes of food waste. The secondary shelf life (SSL) is the period a product should be consumed within once open, specified in the label, which sometimes is extremely short and may lead to a significant amount of discarded food. This study focuses on evaluating the SSL of Bolognese sauce through domestic use simulation and monitoring its microbiological and sensory quality, to explore the potential extension of the SSL, allowing consumers more time to consume the product. Results show that, even under harsh usage conditions, Bolognese sauce can have a SSL longer than 13 days, 2–3 times longer than the current SSL. The results highlight the influence of consumer behavior in determining the SSL, suggesting that improved food management could further reduce household food wast

    Properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) films as determined by thermal curing and addition of polyfunctional organic acids

    The aim of the study was to assess the effect of the addition of citric and malic acid and heat curing on the mechanical, physical and optical properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) films. The addition of the organic acids without successive thermal treatments has a mere plasticising effect, while their application with heat curing has a combined crosslinking and plasticising effect. While conventional plasticizers and crosslinkers improve either extensibility or tensile strength of films, respectively, the addition of citric and malic acid coupled with heat curing determined good tensile strength and extensibility. Hydrophilicity was significantly reduced by thermal curing and even further reduced with the organic acids addition. The high transparency of the PVOH films was not affected either by heat-curing, acid addition and their combination, while the use of high curing temperature coupled with acid addition caused a slight yellowing of the films. The use of citric and malic acid in combination with thermal curing is a viable strategy for tailoring the performances of PVOH films thus broadening their spectrum of application

    More than two years of soil moisture data derived from the Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT) and from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) radiometer are analysed and compared. The comparison has been performed within the framework of an activity aiming at validating the EUMETSAT Hydrology Satellite Application Facility (H-SAF) soil moisture product derived from ASCAT. The available database covers a large part of the SMOS mission lifetime (2010, 2011 and partially 2012) and both Europe and North Africa are considered. A specific strategy has been set up in order to enable the comparison between products representing a volumetric soil moisture content, as those derived from SMOS, and a relative saturation index, as those derived from ASCAT. Results demonstrate that the two products show a fairly good degree of correlation. Their consistency has some dependence on season, geographical zone and surface land cover. Additional factors, such as spatial property features, are also preliminary investigated

    L’attività di ricerca è focalizzata sull’analisi delle normative in materia di contratto di lavoro a termine in Italia, Francia e Spagna. Si tratta di Stati che, al pari del nostro, fanno un grandissimo uso di tale fattispecie, divenuta nei fatti il principale canale di ingresso nel mondo del lavoro, con percentuali complessive di rapporti a tempo determinato anche superiori a quelle italiane. Il confronto con due Paesi a noi vicini da un punto di vista giuridico, culturale e sociale è servito allo scopo di valutare la razionalità e l’opportunità delle profonde modifiche apportate alla disciplina generale da parte del decreto-legge n. 34/2014 (c.d. Decreto Poletti) ed ancora prima dalla riforma del sistema risarcitorio ad opera della legge n. 183/2010. Per ciascun ordinamento sono prese in considerazione le regole finalizzate alla tutela dei diritti dei lavoratori a termine, nonché gli orientamenti giurisprudenziali che hanno contribuito, specie in materia di non discriminazione, ad implementare il livello di protezione della posizione dei lavoratori stessi. Specifica attenzione viene dedicata, inoltre, alla disciplina del pubblico impiego, settore in cui si riscontra spesso un uso distorto delle assunzioni a tempo determinato, come testimoniano le vicende degli agents contractuels francesi e dei lavoratori c.d. indefinidos no fijos de plantilla. La conclusione della tesi è affidata allo studio del contenzioso originato dai tre Stati avanti alla Corte di Giustizia dell’Unione Europea, al fine di isolare eventuali momenti di sintesi delle differenze delle rispettive regolamentazioni. L’elemento aggregante che affiora dai dicta del supremo organo di giustizia comunitario è il principio di stabilità dell’impiego, la cui portata generale e trasversale può essere utile al fine di orientare l’attività produttiva e interpretativa delle norme nazionali nella direzione di un’implementazione delle tutele spettanti ai prestatori di lavoro a termine.This PhD thesis focuses on the analysis of the discipline about fixed-term employment contract in Italy, France and Spain. It deals with two States that make a big use of such typology, that actually is the principal way to join the labour market, with overall percentages of fixed-term relationships higher than those Italian. The comparison with legal systems so close to us from a juridical, cultural and social point of view is helpful to assess the rationality and the opportunity of the deep changes brought to the general discipline from the decree-law n. 34/2014 (c.d. “decree Poletti”) and still before from the reform of damages compensation (law n. 183/2010). They are considered for each country the rules finalized to ensure fixed-term workers’ rights, as well as court decisions that have contributed, especially in subject of not-discrimination, to improve the guardianship level of the workers themselves. Furthermore, specific attention is turned to the discipline of the public sector, in which we often find a misuse of temporary recruitments, as evidenced by the experiences of French agents contractuels and Spanish workers so called indefinidos no fijos de plantilla. The conclusion of the research pays attention to the study of the contentious originated ahead to the European Court of Justice from Italy, France and Spain, with the purpose to isolate possible moments of synthesis of the different regulations. The unifying element that emerges from the dicta of the highest community organ of justice is the principle of stability of employment, whose general and transversal extent can be useful to the aim to direct the production and interpretation of national rules towards the implementation of fixed-term workers protection

Typical examples of food by-products are fruit peels and pomace, seeds, and others. A large part of these matrices is still discarded in landfills, while a small portion is valorized for bioprocessing. In this context, a feasible strategy to valorize food by-products consists of their use for the production of bioactive compounds and nanofillers, which can be further used to functionalize biobased packaging materials. The focus of this research was to create an efficient methodology for the extraction of cellulose from leftover orange peel after juice processing and for its conversion into cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) for use in bionanocomposite films for packaging materials. Orange CNCs were characterized by TEM and XRD analyses and added as reinforcing agents into chitosan/hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (CS/HPMC) films enriched with lauroyl arginate ethyl (LAE). It was evaluated how CNCs and LAE affected the technical and functional characteristics of CS/HPMC films. CNCs revealed needle-like shapes with an aspect ratio of 12.5, and average length and width of 500 nm and 40 nm, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy confirmed the high compatibility of the CS/HPMC blend with CNCs and LAE. The inclusion of CNCs increased the films’ tensile strength, light barrier, and water vapor barrier properties while reducing their water solubility. The addition of LAE improved the films’ flexibility and gave them biocidal efficacy against the main bacterial pathogens that cause foodborne illness, such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella enterica

    Exploring the Microbial Community of Traditional Sourdoughs to Select Yeasts and Lactic Acid Bacteria

    Sourdoughs represent an awesome example of ecosystem in which yeasts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) interact with each other, defining the characteristics of the final product in terms of composition, texture, taste and flavor. Therefore, the identification of dominant yeasts and LAB involved in the fermentation process can lead to the selection of starters with suitable fermentation aptitude and capable of producing desired aromas and/or aromatic precursors. In this work, two sourdoughs samples (A and B) for Panettone production were collected from an artisan bakery. Yeasts and bacteria were isolated at different fermentation steps on selective agar media. A total of 120 isolates were obtained and firstly characterized by conventional microbiological methods. Afterward, genomic DNA was extracted from the cultures, and (GTG)5-PCR fingerprinting analysis was carried out to reduce the redundance among the isolates. Representative yeasts and LAB strains, having a unique profile, were identified by sequencing the D1/D2 domain of the 26S rRNA and the 16S rRNA genes, respectively. The results highlighted the occurrence of Kazachstania humilis and Fructilactobacillus sanfranciscensis in both sourdoughs. Among LAB, also some other strains belonging to Lactobacillus genus were found. Moreover, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Staphylococcus spp. strains were detected in sample B. In this study, a pool of yeasts and LAB strains for producing starter cultures with specific technological traits for sourdoughs production was obtained

This procedure, known as Quality of Service Management, has not much changed in the last years (DiffServ and Deep Pack-et Inspection have been the most chosen mechanisms). However, the incremen-tal growth of Internet users and services jointly with the application of recent Ma- chine Learning techniques, open up the possibility of going one step for-ward in the smart management of network traffic. In this paper, we first make a survey of current tools and techniques for QoS Management. Then we intro-duce clustering and classifying Machine Learning techniques for traffic charac-terization and the concept of Quality of Experience. Finally, with all these com-ponents, we present a brand new framework that will manage in a smart way Quality of Service in a telecom Big Data based scenario, both for mobile and fixed communications
